Our brand 99GUARD provides ASTM certified Level 2 medical grade masks. Well, what does that mean? Here is a simple explanation:


ASTM stands for the American Society for Testing and Materials, and the international organization works to develop and publish technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. This means that our masks have to pass certain tests to ensure its integrity. 

There are 5 crucial ASTM standards for medical face masks:

  1. BFE (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency)
    In order for a mask to be considered a medical mask, it must have a minimum of 95% filtration rate of 3.0-micron particles, representative of bacteria in aerosols. Bacteria filtration rates of 98% and above provide moderate to high levels of protection.
    1. PFE (Particulate Filtration Efficiency)
      This method of testing requires the mask to filter sub-micron particulate matter 0.1 micron in size, which is representative of a virus.
    2. Fluid Resistance
      Fluid resistance measures the ability of the mask to not allow sprays to transfer from the outer layer of the mask to the inner layers.
    3. Delta P (Differential Pressure)
      This measures how well the mask is able to allow air to pass through. Essentially, it tests the breathability for practical purposes of wearing it.
    4. Flame Spread
      The masks must be able to withstand exposure to a burning flame at a specified distance for at least 3 seconds.


    For level 2 masks, 99GUARD masks satisfy and surpass the 5 ASTM standards as specified below: 

    - 98%+ Bacterial Filtration Efficiency

    - 98%+ Particulate Filtration Efficiency

    - Fluid Resistant at 120 mm Hg

    - ∆P less than 5 mm H2O/cm2 

    - Class 1 Flame Spread
